Presentation by Journalist and Author, Lynda Mapes
Orca: Shared Waters, Shared Home
Lynda Mapes will discuss her book Orca: Shared Waters, Shared Home on Wednesday, June 7 at 6 p.m. Orca whale J35, also known as "Tahlequah," gave birth in July of 2018 in the waters off British Columbia, but her calf died soon after, leading its mother to carry her for 17 days across 1000 miles before finally releasing the calf and rejoining her pod. This extraordinary and caring behavior sparked not only worldwide sympathy, but also a revival of our awareness of the critical need to preserve orcas, the chinook salmon they feed on. In Orca: Shared Waters, Shared Home, journalist Lynda Mapes explores the natural history of the orca and the unique challenges for survival of the Southern Resident group that frequents Puget Sound.

Book Discussion Group:
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
"Books were only one type of receptacle where we stored a lot of things we were afraid we might forget.
There is nothing magical in them, at all. The magic is only in what books say, how they stitched the patches of the universe together into one garment for us."
–Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451.
The Petersham Memorial Library Book Discussion Group meets Wednesday, June 14 at 7 p.m. to discuss Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. We have copies in various formats available to check out. Please join us!
Wednesday, June 21, 5:30-7pm ~
Local History Corner: Telling Your Own Story
The Petersham History Society hosts a new local history corner on the third Wednesday of each month. This month's theme is "Telling Your Own Story." Drop in from 5:30-7pm to share your ideas and questions about putting together a family history. This not an organized program, but a time to share ideas. We also plan to embark on a project to gather your Petersham stories and put together a small book of short remembrances, much like the book that was put together by the Cultural Council years ago with stories from Petersham citizens. It's time for an update! Refreshments will be available, too – please join us!
Last Friday of Each Month ~
A World of Mythical Creatures Drawing Club
Join Melizza Chernov (RISD Alumna, Clark University Professor, and professional illustrator) for a cultural and artistic exploration of mythical creatures. Over the centuries and across the globe, many cultures have developed mythical creatures and stories important to their people.
Melizza will present students with the history, cultural significance, and geographical importance of a mythical creature each month, accompanied by an art lesson. Students ages 11-17 will create a “passport” of drawings of mythical creatures from around the world.
This program will run on the last Friday of each month starting in January. This program is brought to you by the Petersham Memorial Library with help from The Coolidge Fund.
Note: Registration is currently full and we are keeping a waitlist for this year-long program.
Please call the library at (978) 724-3405 or email ajohns@cwmars.org.
